The Warmth of Home
Even without the fireplace roaring, rooms with hearths offer cozy ambiance.
It doesn’t matter if it’s the bedroom, living room, dining room or a sitting area, a fireplace adds to the charm and appeal of any interior space. But knowing how to properly decorate around this functional design element is the difference between physical and aesthetic warmth.
“A fireplace can actually be very cold- looking in a room when it’s all by itself, so what we do is design around it to give the room a cozy, warm look,” said Linda Pravata, co-owner of New Age Interiors with her partner Melissa Fenigstein.
Put into practice, one client wanted to do something with a fireplace surrounded by bare, white walls (see cover photo). By painting the walls mocha, adding a mantle above the fireplace, and accenting the mantle with deep, white semi-gloss paint, it stands out more.
And with the addition of a double chaise, which offers enough space for a couple, recessed lighting on dimmers and decorative accent candles on the mantle, the interior design adds a little romance to this sitting area off the master bedroom.
