Finding Space Outside the Home

Certified relocation and transition specialists can arrange short-term housing during your next renovation.

When you think about a major overhaul to your home, the planning phase includes finding an architect, selecting materials and hiring a builder. And then of course there is the permitting and financial process. Suddenly, as the building window approaches, most people find they forgot one important consideration: where to live during the renovation.

Diane Landau, founder of Memories on the Move, is a New York State Certified relocation and transition specialist. The focus of her business is facilitating short-term housing for homeowners once major construction begins. Her company also arranges for the boxing and storage of household contents, and general cleanup of household junk.

As a case study, one couple with children who recently renovated their Dix Hills home found themselves in a bind and couldn’t find any temporary rentals within their school district. After contacting Memories on the Move, the solution was a two-bedroom unit at an extended stay hotel, replete with housekeeping and two meals a day.

“Once they were settled, and the boxes labeled and in storage, we threw away all the other items,” said Landau. “Then, when the renovation was complete, the moving company put everything back and my job was done.”

Landau also offered why her company has a competitive advantage over doing these tasks on your own. “Because I give these companies so much work, I can negotiate lower prices on moving, storage and temporary housing.”
