Special Report: Choosing a Remodeler

long island home remodelingFinding a qualified, professional remodeling contractor need not be a difficult or unpleasant task.

Remodeling your house is the best way to get the home of your dreams. It increases the value of your home and can give you years of enjoyment.

Lesa Dresher, executive director of the NYC/Long Island chapter of The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), knows all too well how frustrating the remodeling process can be, especially the first phase of finding the perfect contractor. Her organization is the only independent national association dedicated solely to the remodeling industry, and offers professional contractors a certification focused on professional conduct and high building standards.

Among the factors to consider when selecting a remodeling contractor is your assessment of and satisfaction with the remodeling contractor’s workmanship, reputation and integrity, durability of materials used, and equipment. Before hiring any remodeling or home improvement contractor, visit and inspect similar projects that he or she has completed, and establish that you will be able to communicate well with each other to ensure your complete satisfaction with the final product.

While Dresher’s aim is to have every contractor on Long Island receive a NARI certification, the reality is that only a percentage will ever achieve that distinction. Regardless of whether you hire a NARI-certified contractor or not, these tips will help your remodeling process go smoother.

By following a few basic guidelines, you will not only make the selection process easier, but you will also be more prepared to make an informed decision that best suits your needs.

1. Getting the Right Contractor

Look for a licensed and who is a member of NARI, which means that contractor is informed about the latest products, construction techniques and industry issues. NARI members have been screened to make sure homeowners get a reputable, qualified remodeler. NARI members abide by a strict code of ethics and are trusted in the industry. Interview the contractor; they need to be able to understand your desires for the project and you need to be confident that they have your best interests at heart. Check their references.

2. Set a budget

Establish a firm budget for your project and work with your remodeler to get the most for your money. A professional contractor can help you with staying in your budget as you begin to decide on your materials. They can direct you to many alternatives and suppliers who can help with the material selection.

3. Timeline of your project

Decide on the time of year you would like to have the project done. Starting in the fall while the kids are in school sounds great, but take into account any upcoming special events, as scheduling around them will avoid added stress while the project is underway. Get a firm start date and approximate finish date that fits into your schedule.

4. Contracts

Insist on a well-written contract that spells out what you are getting. It should include a description of the project, products, materials that will be used, schedule of time and payment arrangements. It will also include warranties from the contractor and the warranties from manufacturers of the products you have chosen.
