Stepping Up with Style

long island stair buildersCurved staircases and landings make a grand statement inside the home.

When the vast majority of houses on Long Island were built after WWII, the staircase was thought of simply as a functional part of the home instead of an architectural element.

Take the ubiquitous cape for example. To keep costs low, builders specified 7-foot ceilings, which prohibited anything but a straight 13-step forged iron balusters—often called spindles—can be ordered. Because of the strength and casting ability of metal, these can have twists, curves and flutes, and even decorative scroll work that adds depth to railings and balustrades.

Gabrielle notes that when homeowners are considering a renovation, they should think about the powerful and classy statement a curved staircase can add to their home. Once the paneling and crown molding is in place, and important interior design elements such as chandeliers and stair runners are installed, renovated foyers are transformed from utilitarian spaces into areas where guests will stop and admire your home.
